Long overdue update! 13 Months Old!!!!
So, I haven't updated in quite a while. Sorry about that! We've been busy around here!
The Quinn update: He's in 18-24 month clothes! He nurses in the morning, at lunch and before bed, although I hope to cut out the lunch feeding soon. He is eating solids pretty well, and we've been able to add quite a few new safe foods. I'm not pumping any more! Only those other women out there who have experienced extended pumping will understand how happy that makes me! Quinn will drink soy milk pretty well from a sippy cup at meal times, which is great. His favorite foods at the moment are watermelon, avocado, chicken, and any freeze dried fruit.
Quinn's been crawling for a while. Once he started, he didn't stop! Now he cruises along the furniture one handed, and will take up to 5 steps on his own! He's tall enough to stand on tip toes and grab stuff off the entertainment center and cupboard in the kitchen. The kitties are running out of safe spots. :)
He does love his kitties though. It was actually his 3rd word. That's right, he walks and talks! He knows mama, dada, kitty (usually kitty-kitty), and boo. He likes to hide behind things and pop out and say "boo!". So cute!
New things Quinn can do:
-Walk!!

-He doesn't like his food mixed together, and likes his cup in the cup holder on his tray
He currently has 13 teeth. All 8 incisors, 2 canines, and 3 molars.
Allergy update: No new allergies have cropped up so far, but his known allergies have gotten worse. So, not only is he allergic/anaphylactic to dairy, he is now contact allergic. Just recently we have discovered he is contact allergic to egg as well. This basically means if he touches anything, or anyone touches him with even small traces of these things, he will break out in hives. If he gets it on his hands or face, and then ingests any, it is possible to spark a full blown allergy attack/anaphyaxsis. No good, no fun...

Birthday! Quinn had his first birthday. We celebrated three times, actually. Lucky boy. He got gobs of presents and loved his cupcakes! (Yay allergen free mixes!)

-Pus blocks together, and takes them apart
-Says mama, dada, kitty, and boo

10 1/2 Months
Quinn is 10 1/2 months old!!! He's growing so quickly! I feel like my little baby is gone, replaced by this crazy little person! I love it (although I do miss the sleeping on me all the time infant stage)!
He is wearing 18 month clothes. My big boy! He has dropped nursing at dinner time, but otherwise still every 3-4 hours breastfeeding with breakfast and dinner solids, and sometimes lunch. His list of safe foods is slowly growing, and we've had no new allergies pop up lately. Still pumping at work, which I'm going to try and drop when he's a year. We'll probably keep up the breastfeeding until 18 months, since weaning onto cow's milk isn't an option, milk alternatives don't really have the same nutrition, and his diet isn't really varied enough. He loves to feed himself, and really only has thick purees at dinner.
8 teeth! With a break from teething for a while!
He's mobile! Not just crawling. Whatever the sprinting equivalent to crawling is, he does it! He's so proud of himself! The cats aren't really happy, but they can still go up and he can't follow. :) He stood up in the bathtub (against the edge) a couple of times, so I imagine cruising won't be far behind.
New things Quinn can do:
-Crawl!
-Put balls into the holes in toys
-Turn pages in books
-He's very vocal, mama and dada have come out but not to us!
Quinn quirks:
-He loves to be outside, but the grass freaks him out!
-He's ticklish under the armpits and his feet
-He loves to take things off shelves, particularly his books. :)

9 month check up and an allergy update
Quinn had his 9 month check up on Monday. He's doing well. He's 19 pounds, 13 ounces (37%); 29 inches long (74%), with a head circumference of 18.5 inches (90%). Tall, skinny with a Harman sized head. Pretty good. :) The Dr. could hear his heart murmur again, but only from one spot and is still not concerned about it. If it is still audible at his 12 month check up, she'll send us for an echo. Pretty standard visit, no shots.
On the allergy front...we got the blood results back and he came back with low positives for egg and peanut, high positives for dog and cat, and an extremely high level for milk.
Allergy elimination dieting now includes wheat, milk, egg, peanut, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, oatmeal and barley. (We're avoiding the fish, shellfish and tree nuts as a preventative until he's 5 or 6 and avoiding barley and oatmeal because the kiddo now breaks out in a rash all around his mouth if he eats them.) Just in case you're wondering: would it be easier to put him on formula? perhaps, but not as nutritious or cheap :), and we've already decided that when he starts crawling we're not having anything in the house he can have an allergic reaction to.
Foods Quinn can safely eat at this time: rice, avocado, sweet potato, carrots, green beans, butternut squash, white potato, apple, banana, cinnamon, blueberry (although he doesn't seem to like it after vomiting the blueberry yogurt), and mango. He doesn't like pears and peaches, and he loves peas but they seem to give him a bit of tummy upset, so we're holding off on those for a while.
In an effort to lessen the exposure of animal dander, his room and bathroom are off limits to kitties, we have hepa filter air purifier in his room and we bought a new dyson vacuum (I love it, but ugh it's expensive!) which we are using more often. I'm also not wearing scrub tops when I go to nurse him at lunch and am showering before playing with him when I get home. The animal allergy will either get better or worse, only time will tell.
So that's that. In other news, Quinn slides/scoots backwards, but still doesn't crawl. He spins in circles on his belly, though, which is pretty funny. He likes to play peek-a-boo (he initiates the game), and is starting to try and sign to us! He almost had 'up' today and I think he's tried 'milk' a couple times.

And the Allergies Begin...
Allergies. I knew they were coming. A small part of my brain kept hoping that by some miracle of genetics he would have grasped some code for an immune system that functions as it should, but alas, he got mine. And then some.
Two weeks ago I gave Quinn a piece of bread (home made bread, Tony bread), about half an hour later, I gave him a little more. Then he tried yogurt for the first time. - Now mind you, I have been obsessive. I breastfed exclusively until 6 months, only doing solids after that point. I normally wait 3-4 days between new foods. I didn't think the bread was new (he'd had wheat cereal, etc.)- He liked the bread, he loved the yogurt...his immune system did not.
His face broke out in a rash. He coughed. I freaked. He vomited. We all freaked. He coughed some more. He vomited some more. He cried. I cried. Tony rushed out for Benadryl. He vomited. He coughed. Snot poured out of his nose. His body broke out in large hives. He breathed slowly and purposefully. We gave the medicine. Immediately his breathing improved and he stopped coughing. 20 minutes later the hives were gone. He cuddled, then got twitchy/fidgety (which is how I get with some meds), then he slept. I put him in his crib only because he was too hot on me. He slept.
His doctor said it was probably a yeast allergy. Avoid yeast and we'll talk about it in 3 weeks at his next visit. I took him to see my allergist.
Scratch test for milk and wheat (yeast does not evidently induce such a reaction typically). Both positive with a very large welt for milk. After seeing the severity of the reaction to the scratch test (and given all kinds of pamphlets, orders for me to cut the offenders from our diets, a script for an epi pen and a follow up recommended in 4-6 weeks) we were sent to the lab for a pediatric RAST to see about any other allergens.
I will not go into the emotional horror of the blood draw. There were 4 people before it was successful. He cried a lot, I cried. 30 seconds after the success and hysterical screaming/crying, he smiled at the lab tech and giggled. I love my boy.
So, in order to continue breastfeeding (which I feel is even more important now), I have cut out all dairy and wheat from my diet. Since doing so, he sleeps. He had been waking up at least once or twice, some nights every hour, crying, whimpering...he hurt. I know that now. He sleeps now, no more waking up hurting. My poor baby. I know I couldn't have known. That fact doesn't make me feel better. My sandwiches and ice cream made his (and our) nights miserable. But we are fixing it.
Hopefully, this will all clear up his excema as well.
The results of the blood test should be back in the next few days. More then.

Almost 9 Months!
I'm really not doing so well with updating...it's almost like I have other things to do! Just in case you can't tell- sarcasm. :)
Quinn is 9 months old on Friday. He has been living out here in the big world almost as long as he was inside of me. It's very hard to fully appreciate the changes 9 months can bring. In 9 months (give or take a little) I went from normal me to the very pregnant (hefting around a 40 pound bowling ball of an abdomen) about to be a mommy me. In another 9 months I went from that pregnant chick to the mother of the most fantastic little person (who has changed so much!). Mind boggling, I tell you. Well, on to the Quinn data...
He is wearing 12 month clothes, but is very quickly outgrowing them. He will be in 18 month soon. He is still eating pretty much every 3-4 hours. He still has one middle of the night feeding, around 2-3 AM. Now, he is getting breakfast and dinner, though. He does not care for fruit, still, but adores vegetables! (Obviously a trait he did not get from his father!) His favorite is still avocado, but he loves any veggie we've tried. I'm making some foods, buying the ones that are a hassle. Other than that, still breastfeeding and pumping at work. *See next post about allergies for more on food issues!
Still a belly sleeper, and doing better these days. (Again, allergy related...)

No crawling yet, but I expect to find him doing so any day. He moves around every which way except crawling. He's really an all or nothing kind of guy, so I assume one day he'll just go, and we'll never stop him!
He is so smart. You can tell when he is thinking about something. He will mimic you, and learns quickly. He tastes foods before he'll open his mouth for them. He can put the rings on the ring tower toy (you know, the one every kid has?). He also understands some sign language and phrases and will respond. He knows the sign/word for milk, eat, and up (improvised sign), and understands 'look at mama'. We're working on more and all done, and bye-bye.

-spin around in circles while sitting
-Splash in the tub
-Interact more with his toys
-growl like a monster (really funny!)
Quinn quirks:
-He loves going in the stroller for walks
-I have a new carrier for him, and he loves to bite on the straps (love my babyhawk!)
-He loves sunglasses! He likes to wear them and giggles like crazy.
I know, I know, pictures. I have the whole month of February to go through and update on the photo blog....a project for tomorrow?

7 1/2 Months Old!!
My little boy is 7 1/2 months old! It's really hard to believe!
He had his six month check up last month. He was 17.5 pounds and 27 inches long! (And he was 18 pounds 12 ounces at 7 months!!) His skin is doing really well, and his cradle cap is pretty much gone!
He is wearing 12 month clothes, except pants...evidently right now he has short legs. :) He eats pretty much every 3-4 hours. He still has one middle of the night feeding, around 2-3 AM. We started solids last month. He gets some at dinner time right now, and we're thinking of adding in some at breakfast next month. He does not care for fruit, but loves his veggies! So far he's tried rice, oatmeal and barley (barley is his favorite, and no more rice because it plugs him up); pears, applesauce, banana, and peaches (kind of likes banana, will tolerate some applesauce in his cereal, but pears and peaches he hates and seem to upset his stomach); and he's had sweet potato, avocado, and peas (all of which he loves, but avocado is his absolute favorite!). I'm making my own baby food for him. It's much cheaper, and not very hard at all. Other than that, still breastfeeding and pumping at work.
No more swaddling! He's actually turned into a belly sleeper most of the time. Sleeping OK, except for the last 3 weeks. He was having a really bad time teething. I think we have a break there, the 5th tooth just pushed out of the gums!
He rolls like crazy, and actually learned to sit up on over Christmas. He sits very well now, and is getting pretty good at balancing himself so he can grab things while sitting. He's gotten up on hands and knees and rocked a couple of times, but not consistently.
We got to see a lot of family over Christmas, and it was great to see everyone! Quinn loved being around everyone, and playing with all his cousins!
New things Quinn can do:
-sit unassisted
-Make noise (he's learned shaking/banging toys makes fun sounds)
-Eating 'solid' foods
-He's said dadadadada for a little while, but not to anyone or anything in particular
Quinn quirks:
-He loves his cats. He will sit and talk/laugh at them for a long time!
-Peek-a-boo is a great thing right now
-When we leave in the morning, I ask him if he's ready to go, and he will always look right at me and smile and giggle
